As global tourism continues its resurgence, reaching 96% of pre-pandemic levels in 2024, countries worldwide are implementing digital visa policies to streamline travel experiences and attract more visitors.

Efforts include adopting biometric identity verification systems and introducing secure digital visa platforms, signaling a commitment to modernizing tourism infrastructure.

Philippines Plans Digital Visa Rollout

The Philippines is set to revamp its visa issuance process as part of a broader push to boost tourism. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. recently approved measures to liberalize visa policies, including the development of a digital visa system.

According to Tourism Secretary Garcia Frasco, this initiative aims to eliminate inconveniences, enhance security, and provide easier access for travelers.

Frasco emphasized the potential benefits of digital visas, stating, “This system will increase tourism spending and benefit local businesses and stakeholders.” The plan follows the Department of Tourism’s (DoT) earlier Cruise Visa Waiver Program, which incorporated biometric technology to streamline traveler checks. The digital visa initiative, a collaboration between the government and private sector, aims to position the Philippines as a premier destination for international travelers.

Mauritania Launches Digital Visa Platform

Mauritania has taken a significant step forward with the launch of its digital visa system on January 5, 2025. Replacing the outdated visa-sticker and visa-on-arrival methods, the new system allows travelers to apply online via the National Agency for the Population Register and Secure Titles.

This innovative system employs biometric gates that scan passenger fingerprints and passports, eliminating the need for manual checks. Eight biometric gates have been installed at the airport’s international departure and arrival terminals.

Italy Introduces Fingerprint Biometric Requirement for Type D Visas

Starting January 11, 2025, Italy will require fingerprint biometrics for Type D national entry visas. Applicants must book an appointment at the Italian Consulate General in Jerusalem to submit their fingerprints in person.
